MARSEIL (Multi Approaches for the Research of Synthesis by Efficient and Interactive Logic) was the name of a system which will offer several programs to the chemist to solve a synthesis problem. The first program developed was a new version of SOS for Macintosh which was inoventive on several points. This version was friendly user thanks to the Macintosh interface. The main new characteristics were : (i) the program was open to the user who may add his own perception of the target during the analysis part ; (ii) the input of reactions, i.e. the knowledge base of the system, was mainly graphic ; (iii) a graphical description of the bibliography was associated with each reaction ; (iv) graphical tests were developed ; (v) possibility to modify the evaluation tests during the retrosynthesis, which gave a property of self-learning to the program.
